Scanning company Holocreators has released a tutorial explaining how to create free 3D scans of objects using a phone camera and free software. Towards the end, they also compare the results to a professional scan created with a scanner that cost 20,000 Euros. According to their results, the difference is just 0.2mm between the meshes. Paris based Immersive Ways has released a beta version of Inside, a new tool to edit immersive, hybrid and interactive content based on the Unity game engine. It combines basic video and audio editing with VR tools such as hotspots, management viewer gaze direction, text and the display of many other types of element. Viewing experiences created with the tool requires a standalone viewer called Sphere that is compatible with Windows, MacOS and Oculus Rift. EffectiveTDs has released Storm, its standalone granular simulation tool. Version 0.2.5 adds expressions for all float and boolean parameters, a Linux version, floating licensing option, the ability for caches and images to be written in the background for up to 2X speed increases, forces based on chunks, a new wind mode force, improved Alembic sequence export to include more data and multiple tool accelerations, improvements on viewport display and other fixes. Software - 3DS Max
Allan McKay has started a new tutorial series that explains in detail a 5 shot sequence of Thanos from Avengers turning to ash. The plates were shot on Blackmagic's Pocket Cinema 4K camera, Thanos was modelled by Franco Carlesimo, and animated by one of ILM's animators from Avengers - Lucas Ridley. In total, the free course comprises 10 videos going through the entire pipeline using tyFlow and PhoenixFD inside of 3DS Max. Find out more on the project's website.
