(Updated) E-on has modified the feature set of the Studio version of The Plant Factory, taking into account feedback the company received after the pre-release announcement. The Studio version now includes full node and graph capabilities that where previously available in the Producer version only. The limitations regarding distribution of content created with the software, however, remain unchanged. More on The Plant Factory’s website.
E-on Software announced that a pre-release version of their plant modeling and rendering system is now available for purchase. The software comes in a number of versions, which cost from $99 to $1495. A pre-release version of The Plant Factory Studio is being offered for one week at an introductory price of $395 (a 60% discount from the final $995 price).
E-on is placing a restriction on customers’ ability to redistribute content created with The Plant Factory. According to E-on, the software’s license “does not allow distribution of content made by you in Plant Factory, neither in the native format nor in standard 3D formats (FBX, OBJ, 3DS, etc)”. This restriction has received negative feedback on The Plant Factory’s website, which prompted a response from E-on Software’s president, Nicholas Phelps. If, however, you’d like to sell content created with The Plant Factory, according to E-on this can be done through the company’s Cornucopia3D Store, in which case artists keep 70% of the revenue.
Also of note, E-on states that the pre-release version currently available has a few limitations, including the fact that the automatic bridging between Vue and Plant Factory is not yet operational. Also, the documentation is not ready, and the content is not finalized. Those buying the pre-release version will be getting the final version at no extra charge, as soon as it ships. E-on are expecting to release the final version in the coming month.
