No, I don’t think so, don’t worry, people is already jumping out of the boat of renting only software, not just small companies, but also the big ones.
If you have some friends in some studios ask them if, for example, modellers are beign asked about Modo or other alternatives to Maya/Max and it’s possibilities for modelling, animation will be the last boat to be left, but FX… well, houdini is clapping his ears one against the other…

Cheers.

For studios, I would imagine that they are with active maintenance, so it doesn’t make sense to change.

To keep paying the $600 +/- per year is still cheaper than renting or buying and changing your pipeline software.

The major problem with renting is for freelancers, no?

And for studios, I run a studio and as a studio I prefer to make a bigger investment at the beggining and not having to pay more if I don’t want to, I can make my license endure as much as I want, of course if you are referring to big movies studios, well, it all depends, a lot of fx are sub-hired to smaller studios so this may be affecting them too.

This kill any freelance since a freelancer have to study and work and do non-paid job for himself a lot of times, just for self promotion, and as a freelance you have to keep paying to be able to do so, AND if you want to MODIFY your old files for whatever reason you have to pay for it, you are their hostage basically…

Renting as an option… cool.. ONLY option?… not cool… bad for any artist, and if there are people that still don’t realize that, please make numbers, sum all the rented software you are going to be forced to pay each month… this may kill your business on the medium/long run…

This is a great update from Cebas. Been waiting for the official release! Will improve our workflow tremendously.

Haters gonna hate still talking about “rentals”

thats wrong. I had a project where I used TP recently. I bought all Version before when I had projects for it. This time I stuck with the old one. And I will do that for the future or switch to houdini, because I will NOT rent Software.

What’s wrong? That they made a fantastic update? That the new caching is a HUGE plus rewritten from the ground up? That the fluids update is another huge update?

Or it’s wrong they’re a private business that needs money to continue progress and innovation? I think people are misguided how the funds are being used by Cebas. MauricioPC has a good grasp on rentals in this case.

If you’re still using the older versions then you really don’t understand how good these updates are in the pipeline and how much faster Cebas has been developing. Thinking about all the times you bought in the past and the cost, it would take you 3 rental years to equal the cost of what you paid.

I agree with Uli, Allegorithmic has a great setup, but people still found a way to complain about paying $75 to update to their version 2. The company still needs to make money some how. People will always find a way to complain about something especially on this site.

Sorry, YOU don´t get it !

I have to sign contracts where I need to go back to old Scenes for a certain amount of years and be able to open them. Thats fact, I can´t get this Jobs without this contracts.

But I just can ensure that if I would have a permanent License. What happens, when Cebsa is closing it´s doors next year ? Or discontinou this plugin ? We have seen it on XSI, on Autodesk Edit, Combustion, Shake and so many more ? With a permanent License I can open the backups for years and ensure that, with a rental License this gone and I can´t fullfill my contracts.

It is so easy ! I will not build my Business on the godwill of any other Company, if this could destroy my existence.

And you said they Need Money: totaly right, they would get MY Money again, if they would let me buy it again.

As Long as this is not possible, I will not buy new versions of TP, Adobe or any other Product. And it is not a matter of great Features, it could be the Revolution in the industry, but I would not join because I want to Keep the risc on my side ONLY.

I forgot to mention that the Price is NOT an issue. Let me buy the plugin for 2000 Dollar, no Problem I will do.

let me just rent it for 10 Dollar, I will not !

Just think about it, in which case they would make more Money, with rent ONLY and losing People or with Option to rent AND selling permanent licenses for a huge Price ?

They would got my Money, for sure, and I am not the only one !

Houdini Indie is rental only.

Yeah…do you hace the opción to acquire Houdini site a permanent license? Yes…

Hence the problem here is rental only software, with Houdini you have both options, with C4D you have both options, with Allegorithmic you have both options, the key word here is “options”

If rental is SOOOOOO good for users they will pick it over acquiring the license, why to remove permanent licenses? Because you know it”s bad for users and you want to force them into this hostage situation, very good behaviour.

MaxUser25 I can’t care about new fractures of something I cant acquire, I don’t think you should call us “haters” because we are fighting for everyone possibilities, for the habilitation to have the option to choice the license that fits your business and your personal situation better, we are trying to avoid the abuse the companies are doing, and if you don’t want to see this or make the numbers with all the rented software you are going to pay monthly, so realize that your costs are going high, reaaaally high, then I think that you don’t need to pay for your licenses, you work for someone else and you don’t care about costs, if it’s not the case it’s a non sense to not be worried.

Anyways you should be worried because if this trend stabilizes the first person that is going to be affected is you, your salary will be seriously affected, and the ability of the company you work for to hire more people will be reduced too so no more extra help for this hard to finish projects, or what do you think? That clients are going to start paying more just out of magic?

We are not haters, we try to make people realize how this is very bad in the medium/long term.

Cheers.

So…. my choice is $200/year rental or $4,500 + $2,500/year.
IF you want floating lic, $7,000 + $4,000/year.
Do u think it is fair?

Yes, as has been stated several times the problem is not the price, is the mandatory renting.
I will be happy to pay for Houdini, and I won’t be forced to pay those 2000€ if I can’t or don’t want to, I may keep my license and no one will get away my tool, so I will be able to modify my jobs and to create new ones without paying to anyone, I’m not their hostage.

Excellent new release! for me the new SPH and implicit shape are a bonus, but the new cache options, with options to choose wich data channels to store, improved reading of prt, exporting importing of alembic (really fast), hierarchy caching are so sweet!

Cebas continues to do the best plugin there is for 3ds max and it’s worth every penny. I think Cebas deserves the money for their hard work and ongoing development of this plugin, but at the same time, it’s a lot of money each year and another license model would be a great thing.

It is great that people keep denouncing rental-only licensing. We should all reject it, the system is a scourge. Companies implementing it as only option are so ashamed that they call it ‘subscription’. Allegorithmic is the way.

There should at least be a monthly licence option for TP. I have the full annual rental licence at work, but it only works on 1 machine only. You cannot use this licence at home and work – very mean.

So when I wanted to complete a project at home I have to pay for another annual licence!!!

David. Teamviewer VPN to your license server. I rent a seat of TP and I’m able to use it anywhere in the world from any internet connected machine this way.

Google teamviewer VPN setup. It’s super easy.
