Vizrt, the creators of visual story telling tools for the broadcast sector has announced the acquisition of NewTek. NewTek are probably best known to readers of this site as the developers of Lightwave 3D, but they also publish several video products including live production systems, cameras, video replay systems, media distribution, control panels and more. With its video and broadcast focus, it is not clear at this point what this means for Lightwave 3D in the long term, but according to a post on the Lightwave blog “the most immediate change users of NewTek products can expect is that our development and marketing of NewTek products (including LightWave 3D) is not changed by this”. You can read the full press release on Newtek’s site.

i get it that Newtek has quite an extensive list of good selling products to reference in this acquisition…but no mention of lightwave 3D in any of em…just NDi , tricaster and skype boxes really, their video arm of things. I guess lightwave is a bonus if they can see it fitting into their real time virtual sets and motion graphics somehow.

I’m not sure how it will play out NAB is this weekend maybe we’ll know more but i think we won’t really know for a few months if they see a good future for Lightwave in their portfolio going forward or shelve it or sell it off… who knows!

I have a funny feeling this might be it for Lightwave.. Hope I’m proven wrong and it gets on the update fast track.
