Sony Pictures Entertainment has shut down Pixomondo, its visual effects studio acquired in 2022. The decision brings an end to the Oscar- and Emmy-winning company after four years under Sony ownership, according to reporting by Cartoon Brew.
Pixomondo is expected to wind down operations globally after completing current projects. Portions of its work are set to be absorbed into Sony Pictures Imageworks, reflecting a consolidation of visual effects production within Sony’s internal structure.
Sony acquired Pixomondo as part of a strategy to expand its virtual production capabilities. The studio had been known for its work with LED volume stages and real-time workflows, which had become widely used in film and television production pipelines.
Founded in 2001, Pixomondo developed an international presence with offices across North America and Europe. Its credits include series such as Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and The Boys. The company received an Academy Award for its work on Hugo and multiple Emmy Awards for Game of Thrones.
The number of employees affected has not been disclosed. The closure impacts staff across the company’s international locations. The move aligns with a broader pattern in which major studios shift visual effects production in-house rather than relying on external vendors.
The shutdown occurs during a period of continued instability in the visual effects sector, where studios have faced restructuring and closures despite ongoing demand for content.
