Maybe it’s just me, but I can for the life of me figure out what’s going on in that thread. Mainly, it’s because I get the impression that each poster is arguing for something slightly different than the other posters, then getting angry when people disagree with something they’re not saying.
The pre-2015 problem:
When consecutively zooming in, the zooming speed gets smaller and smaller until near 0 and you stick there.
The 2015 problem:
It samples geometries to always get a proper zooming speed so you never stick, but the sampling happens at every operation.
The solution is simple:
Preserve pre-2015 behavior completely, and enable the geometry sampling only if you intentionally press down a convenient modifier key combination and click (LMB when in Zoom/Pan mode or MMB) on the geometry.
