The NVidia Advanced Rendering Center has released a Max (2013) plugin that provides access to Iray’s material model, offering features such as:
– 3 layers: Glossy Coating, Metallic Flakes, Glossy/Diffuse/Transparent Base
– Backscattering (for realistic fabrics)
– Metallic flakes (for great car paint)
– Sub-surface scattering
– Thin film coating
– Spectral dispersion
– Anisotropy on each layer
– Emission (self-illuminance)
– Displacement, bump, round corners, cutout
More at the Iray Dev blog. The plugin can be found on NVidia ARC’s forum and it can also be downloaded from Jeff Patton’s blog.

I must say this is the news i was waiting for months – simply awesome!!! Thanks to Jeff and all who have worked on it, at last some good new stuff for Iray and for us, artists!
3 global questions:
1) Why not as a MentalRay Shader too?
2) Did you try to open it in Slate? I wonder what was the plan to work with this 13-screens long shelf? 🙂 (maybe few logical category-roll-outs would save us from this snake)
3) Why the hell do i need to register to download a free plugin?
(and why i can get it already from Jeff, Twitter, etc without entering my personal data, much easier and faster. Why must i avoid Nvidia website in order to get their software?)
igor
This is something I’ve been waiting for for a while, and after one night using it, I love it.
Thanks to the devs for releasing this.
