Maya Unlimited 2009 and Maya Complete converge: Maya 2010 has all the features of Maya Unlimited 2009 and Maya Complete 2009, plus Maya Composite (a composting system based on Toxik, which is no longer available as a standalone solution), Autodesk MatchMover camera tracking software (from the Realviz acquisition), five Mental Ray batch render nodes and the Backburner network render queue manager. This may signal Autodesk’s willingness to include MatchMover in 3DS Max in the future. Autodesk has also announced that it is offering bundles of Max or Maya with Mudbox and MotionBuilder. It seems ZBrush is proving to be tough competition. Besides the features of each software, there’s a difference in Autodesk’s restrictive licensing system and drastically varying prices in different countries that still plays in favour of Pixologic and other players. Also of note, Autodesk will be releasing soon a Connection Extension for Max 2010 that improves interoperability with design packages from Autodesk and certain third parties. Last but not least, the Autodesk Assistance Program gives unemployed artists 90-day free access to the latest Max and Maya software releases so they can continue to develop and hone their skills while looking for work.
