Unity has announced the acquisition of IDV, the makers of the SpeedTree tree and plant modelling tools. According to the announcement, in the short term, nothing will change but long term benefits will include deeper integration with Unity. Read the press release in full on the Unity blog.
Hope they keep up the VFX support 😐
For now, nothing will change…
Strong emphasis on “For now” with that one.
Can we expect another fully paid Unity spinoff? Wondering about the strategic point of that move.
ffs, its like a race isnt it. who can buy more software and gain more leverage.
Hmm not really a good news … it would have fit way better to Epic and their new VFX approach
True
Probably you are right. I also cannot see any other point than “let’s buy something to make the brand stronger”. Unless they plan to make a super system for foliage (Unity HDRP still does not support even grass, and now we have release 10 – I mean, really?).
I agree this seems like a really bad acquisition. (for the speedtree guys)
Personally I don’t really have much faith in the company behind Unity given how badly they handle their main product.
Most likely Epic will buy Plantfactory if they didn’t get there hands on this.
Only GrowFX stays safe
