a note on crossgrading, i’ve just had a reply from someone who has done this and you do not get to keep your old software, you have a 60 day transitioning period but then you’re on your new software so if we got from 3ds max to maya..after 60 days you’re now MAYA and 3ds max is not licensed to you any longer.

I asked these questions today in the webinar and the reseller (motion media) answered to his best ability, so this is not official answers from Autodesk but were as motion media a reseller currently understand the situation. The webinar was all about subscription and rental so these types of questions were expected.
In any case, it’s good to see that Max users now can transition to Maya. Just like Softimage users! 🙂
Very annoying to see the “offer” to switch to Maya.
So, to sum it up, the rental cost per seat is the same as subscription but without the 4000€ when buying a seat? Is this correct?
Steve wrote: “…so that’s about 1/2 price of outright rental cost.”
For me it sounds like: If you are on subscription, nothing is gonna change as the yearly rental will be more or less the same as the subscription price right now. BUT, if you are currently not on subscription you will have to pay a higher rental.
About the “offer” to switch to Maya: Yes, sounds like “Everybody, please consider moving over to Maya”
RE THE TRANSITION TO MAYA…THAT WAS A SPECIFIC QUESTION FROM ME!
this was NOT brought up by autodesk…i just asked as Maya seems to be the app moving forward compared to 3ds max in the last 5 years.
Ah, ok. Sounded like it came from Autodesk.
Yes and when it is rental only and you have no more old versions all of your old plugins will always be magically updated to the latest version even the ones that haven’t seen dev in years cool! I am so excited for such forward thinking open mindedness in licensing. *sic 🙂
