Nightshade “poisons” AI models that scrape artwork without permission
Computer scientists at the University of Chicago have released Nighshade, a new tool designed to prevent generative AI models from using images without consent for training. It transforms images into “poison” samples that lead the models to learn unpredictable behaviors. Nightshade aims to deter model trainers who disregard copyrights and opt-out lists by associating a small incremental price on each piece of unauthorized data scraped for training purposes. The tool works similarly to Glaze, which is the same developer’s defensive tool used by individual artists to protect themselves against style mimicry attacks. Nightshade on the other hand, is an offensive tool that artists can use as a group to disrupt models that scrape their images without consent.
Find out more on the project’s website.
In the digital world, antidotes emerge faster than so-called “poisons”… good luck to those “Computer scientists” involved in the project…
Just another university grant money scheme. What these artists and people dont realize is that every single artist has been using “ai” since books were invented its called looking up “references” at this stage da Vinci should be suing the world for copyright violations of centuries.
This whole ai generative thing has gone too far outside mega corporations, and good luck suing corporations, you aready use gmail they know, use your life data and have violated your privacy a thousand times over now let alone your art.
Get over AI already, people will use your art so long as its displayed online or a museum.
Maybe Italy can start suing the world, and Greeks the Italians :)))
The comments right here are what helps identify people with exactly zero talent, angry at people who do have talent, and hoping that AI will help them copy/paste other people’s work with zero consequences.
Anger is what i mainly see at the AI hater side. Like in your comment here. And it nearly always comes from people who doesn’t know how AI works and what AI is (and is not) capable of.
AI does not steal. It does not copy. This is not how it works, and is technically simply impossible. It is also no tool for untalented people. Quite the opposite. You imho need even more skills to master AI. It does simply not stop at Midjourney and throwing a single buzzword into the prompt. That would be like reducing Photoshop to the selection tool.
Open your eyes. Making graphics for the industry was and is mainly crafting. And this part has very little to do with talent, but with patience and learning the rules and tools. Even Michelangelo had its hordes of craftsmen for painting out the Sistine Chapel.
The industry is working with tools to speed up work since a long time. Landscape generators, remesher, autorigger … why do you think that AI does not fit into this list? To be able to sculpt in ZBrush does not make you talented. But skilled in this tool.
The really talented people will simply use AI as yet another tool in the belt to reach their artistic goals, and increase their productivity. And continue to do even more amazing artwork.
Fact is, AI will change the industry. You can be as talented as you want. And you can dislike AI as much as you want. When you need a month for some artwork where AI spits out three dozen even better results in a minute then you are not longer able to compete. So you better learn it as long as there is time for. And be it to just understand how AI really works. Dodos died out for good reason.
Which leads me back to topic. Nightshade is for me a form of terrorism from some neo ludists that cant’ stand to see the world change. Which makes me sad, not angry. Especially since nowadays a simple disconsent is enough to keep the scrapers out in case you really dislike that somebody looks at your public available artwork.
