Established in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex. It holds 137 million items and is administered by the US government. In order to make some of the most important items of the collection available to a wider audience the Smithsonian is scanning them and uploading them to the net.
They have created a WebGL-based viewer in collaboration with Autodesk, called the Smithsonian X 3D Explorer, which allows to display the objects with various additional functionality, including guided tours created by curators of the museum. Point-cloud versions of the objects are also available for download for printing them out in 3D with higher accuracy. Watch a video showing the 3D Explorer’s functionality and check out the growing 3D collection on the Smithsonian X 3D’s website.
